pix of Lhasa cafe — Curious locals at the Happy Small Restaurant Of Plateu (they got spelling of restaurant right!) I never saw anyone starved, man or dog, but I did see the worker in the door giving the young boys our leftovers to eat.

prayer flags and rock paintings — These are prayer flags and paintings near a monastery of the fierce deities of Buddhism which remove the obstacles to enlightenment. The heroine in my novel believes these to be laundry lines!

monk at potala in 1987 — One of hundreds of Potala Palace monks in 1987. There are apparently only a handful left for upkeep. Many have been killed and detained in riots since the Dalai Lama left in the 50s. The place has 500 rooms and was a major monastery before the Chinese takeover turned it into a money-making museum.

tibet street — This has to be Gyantse, a former fort, because of the ancient walls on the hillsides around it. The British attacked and took it in 1904.

Himalayas panorama bus stop — Bus stop before descending from the Tibetan plateau into the Kathmandu valley. In my novel I describe my heroine meditating outside wrapped in a sheepskin coat and here this monk wears an exact example of that.

news clipping of rioting monks of Tibetonks — This is a newspaper I bought in Kathmandu, a week after I left Lhasa in June, 1987. Typo no month on the date but the violence was mid June. Travel inside Tibet is only through guided tours since a repeat of these uprisings in 2008.The 1987 riots by monks against Chinese rule marked the end of independent travel and the only way now is with overpriced Chinese tours. Talking to any Tibetans is strictly prohibited and clearly stated in tours.
